France’s Rafale F5 Deployment at Luxeuil Air Base Near Germany Sparks Defense Panic

France is making a major move to strengthen its nuclear defense by upgrading Luxeuil Air Base, located near the German border. The country plans to station its most advanced Rafale F5 fighter jets at the base, armed with powerful ASN4G hypersonic nuclear cruise missiles. French President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement during a visit to the airbase, revealing a $1.6 billion modernization plan to prepare Luxeuil for these next-generation aircraft.

Luxeuil Air Base to Host Advanced Nuclear Jets

The decision to reintroduce nuclear capabilities at Luxeuil marks a shift in France’s defense strategy. Previously, the base housed nuclear assets but stopped in 2011. Currently, France operates three nuclear-capable airbases: Saint-Dizier, Istres, and Avord. These bases are home to Rafale jets carrying ASMPA missiles. However, with Luxeuil joining the list, France is expanding its nuclear deterrence program significantly.

The upgraded airbase will accommodate two squadrons of Rafale F5 jets, totaling 40 aircraft. These squadrons will be a key part of France’s nuclear strike force. The first squadron is expected to arrive in 2032, and full operational capability is anticipated by 2035. The move comes at a time when European nations are reconsidering their security policies, particularly in light of discussions about reducing reliance on U.S. defense guarantees.

Rafale F5: A New Era of Aerial Warfare

The Rafale F5 is an advanced version of the Rafale fighter jet currently used by the French Air Force. It will feature cutting-edge upgrades to enhance its performance and survivability. One of the key improvements is the integration of enhanced electronic warfare systems, allowing the aircraft to better evade enemy radar and counter enemy attacks.

The “loyal wingman” drone capability is yet another significant innovation. This means that Rafale F5 jets will operate alongside unmanned drones, which can provide extra firepower, surveillance, and protection in combat situations. This feature will make the French Air Force more adaptable and capable in modern conflicts.

The jet’s design is also undergoing changes to improve its stealth capabilities. The introduction of conformal fuel tanks will allow the aircraft to carry more fuel without increasing its radar signature. Additionally, new radar-cross-section reduction kits will make it harder for enemy defenses to detect the jet. These enhancements will help the Rafale F5 maintain an edge over potential adversaries.

The current Rafale model in service has a top speed of 863 miles per hour (750 knots) and a maximum takeoff weight of 54,000 pounds (24.5 tons). While the exact specifications of the Rafale F5 are still in development, it is expected to surpass the performance of its predecessors.

ASN4G Hypersonic Missile: A Game-Changing Weapon

The Rafale F5 will be armed with the ASN4G hypersonic nuclear cruise missile, developed by MBDA with support from ONERA, a leading French aerospace research agency. This missile is set to replace the existing ASMPA missile, which has been in service for several years.

The ASN4G is designed to exceed speeds of Mach 5, meaning it will travel more than five times the speed of sound. With a range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), it will be significantly more powerful than the ASMPA missile, which has a range of around 500 kilometers (310 miles) and reaches speeds above Mach 3. The ASN4G will carry a 300-kiloton thermonuclear warhead, making it a highly potent strategic weapon.

The ASMPA missile, currently in use, is powered by a liquid-fuel ramjet and has been a key part of France’s airborne nuclear deterrence. However, with advancements in missile defense systems worldwide, the need for a faster and more advanced hypersonic missile has become essential. The ASN4G will ensure that France maintains a credible nuclear deterrent in the evolving security landscape.

In addition to enhancing its nuclear forces, France is increasing its orders for Rafale jets to replace the Mirage aircraft being transferred to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Germany’s incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed discussions on nuclear-sharing arrangements with France and the United Kingdom. This signals a growing push for European nations to strengthen their strategic autonomy in defense matters.
