Fierce Taliban Warning to Marco Rubio After U.S. Bounty Proposal

The new U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has issued a stern warning to the Taliban, threatening to place a large bounty on their leaders. This statement came after Rubio claimed that the Taliban are holding more American hostages than reported. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that if these reports are accurate, the U.S. would consider offering a bounty on their top leaders, potentially even larger than the one placed on Osama bin Laden.

This comment followed a recent prisoner swap between the United States and Afghanistan, which saw two Americans, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, released in exchange for Khan Muhammad, a high-profile Taliban figure. Despite this, at least two more Americans, George Glezmann and Mahmood Habibi, remain in their custody, with the group refusing to confirm how many foreign prisoners they still hold.

Rubio’s strong words have stirred reactions both in the U.S. and abroad. Many are now watching to see how the Taliban, known for their militant history, will respond to these threats.

Taliban’s Sharp Response to U.S. Pressure

In response to Rubio’s comments, the Taliban’s ambassador to Qatar, Suhail Shaheen, issued a chilling warning. He emphasized that the Afghan government prefers resolving matters peacefully through dialogue. However, he reminded Rubio and the U.S. government of the Taliban’s resilience, referencing their decades-long struggle against foreign forces.

Shaheen said, “In the face of pressure and aggression, the jihad of the Afghan nation in recent decades is a lesson that everyone should learn from.” His words hint at the Taliban’s long history of withstanding U.S. military campaigns and their readiness to resist new threats.

The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, after a chaotic and deadly withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces. This marked the end of a two-decade-long conflict, but tensions between the group and the international community remain high. Shaheen’s warning underscores that the Taliban will not back down under pressure, and any aggressive actions might escalate the situation further.

Global Reactions and Other Hostage Releases

While the U.S. grapples with these hostilities, other nations have been engaging with the Taliban for the release of their citizens. Recently, a Canadian national named David Lavery was freed from an Afghan prison through the mediation efforts of Qatar. Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, confirmed that Lavery had arrived safely in Qatar and was in good spirits. She publicly thanked Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister for facilitating his release.

These diplomatic efforts highlight the significant role that Qatar plays in mediating with the Taliban. However, the situation remains volatile, especially with reports of more hostages being held. Rubio’s public comments have added a new layer of tension, drawing both criticism and support within the U.S. and internationally.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin is also seeking to form an alliance with the Taliban. This development raises further questions about the group’s growing international influence and the challenges it poses for global diplomacy.

As the situation unfolds, Rubio’s remarks and the Taliban’s response signal a potentially dangerous standoff between the U.S. and the Afghan militant group.
