Saudi Arabia is making significant progress in its nuclear energy program as part of its efforts to diversify energy sources and promote sustainability. This move aligns with the Kingdom’s long-term strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to global energy security.

Nuclear Energy at the Heart of Saudi Arabia’s Vision

eNuclear energy is crucial to Saudi Arabia’s larger energy shift, according to Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. Speaking at the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He emphasised that the Kingdom’s nuclear development is focused on peaceful purposes.

He stated that Saudi Arabia is working with the IAEA to finalize the necessary agreements to ensure compliance with international safeguards. By the end of December, the Kingdom plans to terminate the Small Quantities Protocol and fully implement the IAEA safeguards agreement.

Commitment to International Standards

Prince Abdulaziz said that Saudi Arabia is serious about following all the rules set by international organizations for its nuclear program. He assured everyone that the country’s nuclear energy plans are only for peaceful purposes and will be clear and open for the world to see. He also mentioned that Saudi Arabia has already done a lot of work to prepare for this, including setting up important regulations. The minister highlighted that Saudi Arabia wants to be a good example for other countries by being honest and cooperative in its nuclear projects.

First Nuclear Power Plant Planned

The first nuclear power plant in Saudi Arabia is set to be built at Khor Duwaiheen. It is located on the Arabian Gulf between Qatar and the UAE. The plant is expected to produce 2.8 gigawatts of power, marking a significant step in the Kingdom’s energy transition.

The development of nuclear energy aligns with Saudi Arabia’s National Atomic Energy Project, launched in 2017. This initiative aims to integrate nuclear energy into the national energy mix. By ensuring a sustainable future while adhering to international commitments.

Ensuring Nuclear Security

Prince Abdulaziz also praised the IAEA for its efforts to promote nuclear security. He highlighted the importance of the IAEA’s International Nuclear Security Training Center in Seibersdorf. This center strengthens the capabilities of member states in maintaining secure nuclear systems.

Collaboration for Gender Equality

Another step is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Women and Energy Association and the IAEA by Saudi Arabia. The agreement focuses on capacity building and enhancing the role of women STEM fields. The goal is to foster innovation in nuclear sciences while promoting gender equality.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Princess Mishaal bint Saud Al-Shalan, Chairperson of the Women and Energy Association, signed the MoU. Prince Abdulaziz was also in attendance.

Saudi Arabia’s advancements in nuclear energy reflect the country’s commitment to a sustainable and diversified energy future. It is integrating nuclear power into its energy mix. The Kingdom aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.

In his closing remarks, Prince Abdulaziz congratulated South Korea’s representative, Sang Wook Ham. As he has been elected president of the IAEA’s 68th General Conference. By further reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s active role on the global stage.
