Germany has launched its first Iris-T air defense system to protect its own territory. This comes after delivering several of these systems to Ukraine to help defend against Russian attacks. The deployment marks a new phase in Germany’s efforts to build up its defenses, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz explained that the Iris-T system is part of a larger plan to strengthen Germany and Europe’s defenses. Russia has ramped up its missile capabilities in recent years, making it important for Germany to respond.
What Is the Iris-T Air Defense System?
The Iris-T is a short-to-medium range missile system. It is designed to intercept enemy aircraft, missiles, drones, and helicopters. The system can engage targets up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) away. Germany has led the development of the Iris-T, with other countries like Greece, Norway, Italy, Spain, and Sweden also involved. Diehl Defence, a German defense company, is the main contractor for the project.
The Iris-T is known for its high maneuverability, making it ideal for close combat situations. Its infrared seeker and thrust-vector control allow it to target enemy aircraft even if they are behind the launching aircraft. This makes it a powerful tool in both short- and medium-range air defense.
Germany’s Defense Strategy
Chancellor Scholz spoke at the inauguration ceremony in Todendorf, near Hamburg. He emphasized that Russia has been rearming for many years, especially with missiles and rockets. Scholz said that Russia had broken disarmament treaties and placed missiles in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave that is only 530 kilometers (330 miles) from Berlin.
Scholz stressed that Germany must act to protect its people and Europe. He said that failing to do so would risk peace. “I will not allow that,” Scholz stated firmly. Boris Pistorius, the minister of defense, was present with the chancellor. Scholz also noted that the Iris-T system is part of the European Sky Shield Initiative, which includes long-range defense systems to counter ballistic missiles.
The Cost of Protection
Germany has ordered six Iris-T SLM systems from Diehl Defence, costing 950 million euros (about $1 billion). Delivery of these systems is anticipated by May 2027. This investment highlights the seriousness of Germany’s defense strategy. The government is focusing on creating a strong defense shield to protect its territory and Europe.
Success in Ukraine
Germany has already supplied four Iris-T systems to Ukraine. These have been used to defend against Russian attacks during the ongoing conflict. Ukraine has requested more Iris-T systems, and Germany has pledged to send an additional eight. Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, was in Germany recently to discuss military support.
Chancellor Scholz revealed that the Iris-T system has been highly effective in Ukraine. It has effectively stopped over 250 cruise missiles, drones, and rockets. This has saved many lives and prevented further destruction. The German-made system has played a crucial role in defending Ukraine from Russian attacks.
Europe Needs More Missiles
Scholz warned that Europe also needs to invest in its own missile systems. While the Iris-T provides strong defense, Europe must also focus on offensive precision missiles. Russia has a significant missile capability, and Europe cannot afford to fall behind in this area. Scholz stressed that defense is the priority, but deterrence is also important to prevent future attacks.
The chancellor confirmed that Germany would begin deploying long-range U.S. missiles, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, in 2026. These deployments are part of a joint defense effort between Washington and Berlin. The goal is to prevent war by making sure that any potential attacker knows the risks.
