The United States remains committed to support Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion. Senior officials from the U.S. Department of Defense reaffirmed this during a press briefing, outlining the latest moves to aid Ukraine in its battle for survival. President Joe Biden, who stayed in the U.S. to manage the response to Hurricane Milton, continues to prioritise military aid for Ukraine.
Biden Reaffirms U.S. Commitment to Ukraine
Although President Biden was unable to attend a coalition meeting in person, his focus on Ukraine has not wavered. On September 26, Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reassured him of the United States’ unwavering support. “The administration remains focused on surging security assistance and taking other steps through the end of the term to help Ukraine prevail,” Biden told Zelenskyy.
One of Biden’s recent actions was to exercise his authority to extend the $5.55 billion in presidential drawdown authority. This prevents the funds from expiring and allows the U.S. to continue providing vital military support to Ukraine.
New Military Aid on the Way
The Department of Defense (DOD) is set to provide Ukraine with critical military capabilities. The new aid package will supply air-to-ground weapons, rocket system munitions, artillery, armored vehicles, and anti-tank weapons, which Ukraine desperately needs for its ongoing defense.
In addition to the drawdown, Biden announced a new $2.4 billion security assistance package for Ukraine. This package includes air defense systems, drones, and advanced munitions. It will also help Ukraine strengthen its defense industry and ensure that equipment can be properly maintained and repaired.
One of the key components of this effort is improving Ukraine’s drone capabilities. The U.S. will supply thousands of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and parts to help Ukraine build its own drones. These drones have proven to be an effective tool in the ongoing conflict, allowing Ukraine to strike Russian targets more precisely.
Heavy Russian Losses in Ukraine
Since the war began in February 2022, Ukraine has inflicted heavy losses on Russian forces. Last month alone saw the highest number of Russian casualties since the start of the war.
The official pointed out that Russia’s losses in the first year of this conflict have surpassed its losses in all wars since World War II combined. Ukraine has also damaged or destroyed 32 Russian navy vessels in the Black Sea, forcing Russia to move its Black Sea Fleet away from Crimea.
One of the most striking statistics is that Ukrainian forces have destroyed more than two-thirds of Russia’s pre-war tank inventory. This has led Russian President Vladimir Putin to resort to using outdated Soviet-era tanks, and even tanks dating back to World War II, in order to continue the fight.
No Major Strategy Shifts
Despite the ongoing losses, neither Russia nor Ukraine has made significant changes to their overall strategies. Russia continues to deploy troops using an attrition-based strategy, particularly in the eastern regions of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine maintains a strong defense, both on the ground and in the air.
The most intense fighting is taking place in the Russian province of Kursk and the Ukrainian region of Donetsk. In Kursk, Russian forces have tried launching counterattacks, but these efforts have largely failed. In Donetsk, Russia made some gains over the summer, but these have since slowed.
In terms of long-range strikes, Ukrainian forces have successfully hit Russian ammunition storage facilities and fuel depots, including several in Crimea. These strikes are expected to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its operations on the battlefield.
Ukraine’s Air Defense Holds Strong
Ukraine’s air defense systems have played a crucial role in defending against Russia’s relentless air attacks. Russian forces continue to launch daily strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, but Ukrainian air defense teams have managed to defend critical sites. This includes energy infrastructure, which Russia has repeatedly targeted in an effort to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply. The U.S. is closely monitoring Ukraine’s air defense stockpiles.
