The Patriot system is built to detect, track, and intercept incoming threats such as drones, missiles, and aircraft. Naval and Air Forces Move Closer to Cyprus
The Hellenic Navy has increased its presence near Cyprus by sending the advanced Belharra-class frigate Kimon toward the island. This is its first operational mission since joining the fleet. The frigate Psara is sailing alongside it and is equipped with anti-drone systems designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.
Belharra-class frigates are modern warships built for air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and surface combat. Their advanced radar and missile systems allow them to monitor wide areas and respond quickly to potential threats.
In addition, four F-16 fighter jets from the Hellenic Air Force are stationed at the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos, Cyprus. The jets operate under joint defense arrangements between Greece and Cyprus and enhance air surveillance and rapid response over the island and nearby waters.

Meanwhile, security activity around Cyprus increased after reports that Iranian-made Shahed drones targeted the British sovereign base at RAF Akrotiri on the night of March 1–2. The strike caused limited material damage, and notably, no casualties were reported.
According to Cypriot sources, the drones may have been launched from Lebanon. As a result, the incident raised concerns about the Middle East conflict extending into European territory, thereby highlighting Cyprus’s strategic role within the EU and NATO framework.
Heightened Alerts Across the Eastern Mediterranean
Following the drone strike and the growing escalation between Israel and Iran, countries in the Eastern Mediterranean strengthened security. Greece deployed a Patriot air-defense battery to Karpathos and sent the frigates Kimon and Psara to Cyprus as part of precautionary measures.
Authorities stressed that these steps are preventive. No confirmed direct threats have been reported against other Greek locations, including Souda Bay in Crete. However, security forces remain on high alert.
