US Greenlights 5.58 Billion Military Sale of F-16 Jets to Philippines

Major Defense Upgrade for the Philippines

The United States has approved a massive US$5.58 billion foreign military sale to the Philippines, boosting the country’s air defense capabilities. The deal includes 20 F-16 fighter jets, along with a large arsenal of missiles, bombs, and advanced military equipment.

The sale, confirmed by the U.S. State Department, will provide the Philippines with 16 F-16 C Block 70/72 aircraft and four F-16 D Block 70/72 aircraft. These fighter jets are among the most advanced versions of the F-16, known for their speed, agility, and advanced targeting systems. They are designed for air combat, surveillance, and ground attack missions.

The package also includes 24 F110-GE-129D or F100-PW-229 engines to power the jets. Additionally, 22 AN/APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars will enhance the aircraft’s ability to detect and track enemy targets. Other key components include 22 Modular Mission Computers and 22 Embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) Inertial Navigation Systems to improve navigation accuracy.

A Strong Arsenal of Missiles and Bombs

Along with the fighter jets, the Philippines will receive a powerful collection of missiles and bombs to strengthen its military capabilities. The deal includes:

  • 112 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) – These are designed to engage enemy aircraft at long distances.
  • 40 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder Missiles – Short-range air-to-air missiles used in close combat.
  • 60 MK-82 (500-pound) and 60 MK-84 (2,000-pound) general-purpose bombs – These are used for airstrikes against ground targets.
  • 30 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) KMU-572 tail kits – These kits convert traditional bombs into guided weapons for precise strikes.
  • 4 AMRAAM guidance sections – Used to improve missile accuracy.
  • 36 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) Increment 1 – Designed for hitting enemy targets with high precision while minimizing damage to surrounding areas.

The sale also includes 22 M61A1 anti-aircraft guns, which will be fitted onto the F-16 jets to provide additional firepower.

Advanced Equipment to Boost Military Strength

Beyond weapons, the deal includes a range of advanced equipment that will help the Philippine Air Force operate and maintain its new fleet. Some of the major components include:

  • 12 AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods – These allow pilots to identify and track enemy targets more effectively.
  • 24 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS) – These improve communication between military aircraft and ground units.
  • AN/ALQ-254 Viper Shield electronic warfare systems – These protect the jets from enemy radar and missile attacks.
  • Infrared Search and Track (IRST) systems – Help detect enemy aircraft by sensing heat signatures.
  • Air Combat Maneuvering Instrument (ACMI) range systems – Used for training pilots in dogfighting and combat scenarios.

Additional training missiles, software, and technical support are also included in the package. The deal ensures that the Philippine Air Force can operate, maintain, and fully integrate these fighter jets into its defense strategy.

Strengthening Ties Between the U.S. and the Philippines

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that this sale would strengthen the defense relationship between the two nations. The Philippines is a key strategic partner for the United States in Southeast Asia, and this deal will help improve its ability to protect its territory and airspace.

The DSCA further clarified that the sale will not impact the military balance in the region. It also noted that no additional U.S. military personnel would be stationed in the Philippines as a result of the deal.

Lockheed Martin, a leading American defense contractor, is expected to be the principal supplier of the fighter jets and other equipment.

With this deal, the Philippines will significantly enhance its defense capabilities, ensuring stronger airspace protection and a more formidable presence in regional security. The addition of 20 F-16 fighter jets equipped with advanced radars, electronic warfare systems, and precision-guided missiles will improve the Philippine Air Force’s ability to conduct aerial patrols, respond to threats, and participate in joint military operations. These modern aircraft will strengthen national defense, deter potential incursions, and enhance the country’s role in maintaining stability in Southeast Asia.
