Russian drones spark high alert in Poland amid escalating strikes on western Ukraine near Lviv

Polish authorities confirmed that two drones entered Poland’s airspace on Wednesday night. Polish national forces closely monitored and controlled the incidents in Poland. The origin of the drones has not been specified.

Russian Drones Cross Into Poland, Sparking High Alert

According to the Armed Forces’ Operational Commander, General Maciej Klisz, “National forces and units assigned to the state defense system had complete control over these two violations.”

The drone incursions come amid a series of Russian missile and drone attacks that have increasingly targeted western Ukraine. This week, 15 Russian drones struck the city of Lviv, which is approximately 40 miles from the Polish border, according to Ukrainian police. In response, Poland scrambled fighter aircraft and activated ground-based air defence systems.

This is not the first time Poland has faced such threats. Last month, a drone exploded inside Polish territory. Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described it as “a provocation by the Russian Federation.” Local witnesses reported hearing the sound of an explosion. Since a stray Ukrainian missile killed two people in a southern Polish village in 2022, Poland has been on high alert for any violations of airspace.

Moscow’s Provocations and NATO Concerns for Poland

Experts suggest that Russia is deliberately testing Poland’s responses with these provocations. Aleks Szczerbiak, Professor of Politics at the University of Sussex, explained that Moscow is trying to gauge Poland’s nerves and readiness. “You’re dealing with a nuclear-armed power that wants to provoke Poland… There is huge sensitivity about Russian drones landing in Poland,” he said.

Professor Szczerbiak emphasized that Russia often designs its actions to make nations uneasy while maintaining plausible deniability. He added that Poland must strengthen ties with the United States to ensure its security. During a recent meeting, former U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed a robust American military presence in Poland to Polish President Karol Nawrocki. “We’ll be staying in Poland. We’re very much aligned with Poland,” Trump said.

International law experts are closely monitoring Russia’s actions. Dr. Noelle Quenivet, Professor of International Law at the University of the West of England, highlighted that Russia may be testing the limits of aggression that could trigger NATO’s Article 5, which mandates a collective defense response. Dr. Quenivet explained that even though Russia has not launched a full armed attack on Poland, authorities closely scrutinize smaller incursions such as drone strikes. She noted that Russia might also use “grayzone operations” in neighboring countries, including sabotage attacks on weapons shipments passing through Poland to Ukraine.

Polish Citizens Voice Concern and Support for Ukraine

Polish residents have expressed concern over the escalating situation near their borders but emphasize continued support for Ukraine. Jan, a 26-year-old resident of Zabrze in southwestern Upper Silesia, told The i Paper, “It’s terrifying that so close to us, just beyond the eastern border, people are dying. Even though this war has been going on for three years, I still can’t get used to it… I hope a war involving Poland does not happen, but we need to prepare as best we can and support Ukraine so it inflicts heavy losses on the Russians.”

Another resident, Michael, from the Silesian Voivodship, highlighted Russia’s role in prolonging the conflict. “The conflict is caused by Russian aggression and a desire to revive the Russian empire,” he said. Michael described Russia as unprepared for modern warfare despite its resources, noting that the war continues because the country lacks the courage to admit its plans have failed.

The incidents highlight the heightened tension along Poland’s eastern border, which is part of NATO’s eastern flank. Authorities in Poland are nevertheless keeping a careful eye on its skies and preparing armed forces to counter any possible threats. Rafale fighter jets from the French Air Force have previously patrolled Polish skies, emphasizing the international cooperation in ensuring the country’s security.

With Russian drone and missile attacks edging closer to NATO borders, Poland’s vigilance remains a key focus for national security, military coordination, and international diplomacy. Poland’s actions continue to be closely watched by NATO allies and the global community.
