19-year-old migrant dies in Florida detention centre as investigation begins

A 19-year-old migrant from Mexico died while being held at a detention facility in Florida used for immigration detainees. The incident took place at the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, a small town in the state.

According to officials, the teenager was found unconscious and unresponsive at around 2:34 a.m. inside a dormitory area. Officers on duty immediately called for medical help and began emergency procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Medical staff arrived within minutes and continued attempts to revive him. Emergency responders also reached the scene and carried out life-saving measures. Despite these efforts, the teenager was declared dead at 2:51 a.m., just 17 minutes after he was discovered.

Authorities stated that the death is being treated as a “presumed suicide.” However, the exact cause has not yet been confirmed. An official investigation is underway, and the final autopsy report is still awaited.

Custody Timeline and Missing Records

The teenager had been taken into custody earlier in the year. He was first arrested in January by local law enforcement in Florida. Officials said he faced charges such as impersonation and resisting an officer.

After spending some time in local custody, he was transferred to immigration detention about a month later. From that point, he remained at the Glades County Detention Center.

However, questions have been raised about the accuracy of records related to his arrest. When authorities were asked to provide documentation, the local sheriff’s office reportedly could not locate his name in their system. This has created uncertainty about how his case was recorded and handled.

At the time of his death, he had been in detention for several weeks. Like many others in similar situations, he was waiting for his immigration case to move forward through a system that often experiences delays.

Rising Deaths in Immigration Custody

This incident is part of a larger pattern of deaths in immigration detention. Reports indicate that this is the second death in custody within the same week.

Since the beginning of the year, multiple migrants have died while being held in detention centers across the country. Overall, dozens of deaths have been reported since early 2025.

The 19-year-old is also believed to be the youngest person to die in immigration custody during this period. His death has drawn attention because of his age and the circumstances surrounding the case.

In recent times, more migrants are being held in detention for longer durations. This is linked to stricter enforcement practices and delays in immigration court proceedings. As a result, detention centers are housing more individuals for extended periods.

Reactions and Conditions Inside Facilities

The death has led to strong reactions from officials and advocacy groups. Representatives from Mexico called the incident unacceptable and asked for a thorough and transparent investigation. Officials from the Mexican consulate visited the detention center and requested detailed information.

Immigrant rights organizations have also expressed concern. They have highlighted issues such as isolation, stress, and lack of proper care within detention facilities. According to these groups, detainees are often kept away from their families and face difficult living conditions.

Some reports from detainees mention problems like unclean surroundings, non-functioning toilets, and poor-quality food. Concerns about access to timely medical care have also been raised.

The facility where the incident occurred had previously been shut down and later reopened to house immigration detainees again. Its reopening is part of wider changes in detention practices.

Authorities have stated that all deaths in custody are taken seriously and are subject to investigation. More details are expected once the inquiry into this case is completed.
